What it does
The link cleaner removes known tracking parameters (utm_*, fbclid, gclid, msclkid, igshid, si on YouTube and Spotify, s and t on X links and others) while keeping parameters the page needs, and can add your own UTM tags.
Why clean links before posting?
Shared links often carry tracking codes from wherever you copied them: a newsletter, an ad, another app's share sheet. Posting them passes that tracking on to everyone who clicks, can attribute your visitors to someone else's campaign, and makes links look messy when they're expanded.
Which parameters are removed?
| Parameter | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign and other utm_* |
Campaign tags (analytics) |
fbclid |
Facebook outbound clicks |
gclid, gbraid, wbraid, dclid |
Google Ads |
msclkid |
Microsoft Ads |
twclid |
X Ads click ID |
igshid, igsh |
Instagram shares |
mc_cid, mc_eid |
Mailchimp emails |
_hsenc, _hsmi |
HubSpot emails |
si (YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music) |
Share identifiers |
s, t (x.com and twitter.com only) |
X's share sheet |
Anything else stays. Links to twitter.com are rewritten to x.com, which is where they redirect anyway.
When should I add UTM tags instead?
When it's your own site and you want to know how many visits came from X. Open "Add your own UTM tags", fill in source, medium and campaign, and tick the box. Existing UTM tags are replaced, so you don't end up with two conflicting sets. The guide to links on X explains naming that stays readable in reports.
Does X count the link length?
No. X shortens every link to a t.co address and counts it as 23 characters, so a clean link and a messy one cost the same in your 280.
FAQ
Will cleaning a link make my post shorter?
Not on X. Every link counts as 23 characters however long it is, because X wraps links with its t.co shortener. Cleaning is about privacy and tidiness, and about not passing on someone else's tracking.
Could removing a parameter break the link?
The cleaner only removes parameters known to be used for tracking. Things like id, page, q or v (the YouTube video ID) are kept. If a site does rely on one of the removed values, the original link is still in your input box.
What UTM values should I use for X?
A common pattern is utm_source=x, utm_medium=social and a short campaign name. What matters most is being consistent so your reports group correctly.
