Hashtags on X: Format, Placement and How Many

Hashtags still work on X as a way to join a conversation or an event. They just break more easily than people think.

Twit'n'Go · · 2-minute read

Short answer

On X a hashtag needs a # not glued to a previous word, followed by letters, numbers or underscores with at least one letter; use one or two relevant tags, write multi-word tags in CamelCase and avoid hyphens, which end the tag.

Key takeaways

  • No space after #, a space before it, at least one letter.
  • Hyphens and apostrophes end the hashtag: #self-care links only #self.
  • CamelCase (#WorldCup) is easier to read and better for screen readers.
  • One or two relevant tags beat a block of ten; X's Help Center suggests no more than two as best practice.

What turns into a hashtag on X?

A # that stands at the start of a word, followed by letters, numbers or underscores, with at least one letter. The tag ends at the first character that isn't allowed.

Where should hashtags go?

Inside the sentence if the word belongs there, otherwise at the end. "Watching the #WorldCup final with the team" reads naturally. "Big news! #startup #saas #growth #founder #tech" doesn't. Putting tags at the end keeps your sentence clean and your point first.

How many should I use?

One or two that people actually follow or search. Event tags, show tags and community tags are worth using. Generic tags like #love or #business rarely help, and a long block can make a post look like spam. X's Help Center calls no more than two hashtags per post best practice, while noting you can use as many as you like.

Why CamelCase?

Because #ThrowbackThursday is readable and #throwbackthursday isn't. Screen readers are also more likely to read CamelCase tags as separate words. It doesn't change the tag: X matches hashtags regardless of case.

A quick fix before posting

Paste your post into the hashtag fixer. It adds missing spaces, joins stray # signs, turns hyphenated tags into CamelCase, removes repeats and can trim the list to your limit.

FAQ

Are hashtags case-sensitive?

No. #WorldCup and #worldcup are the same tag on X. Capitals only change how it reads.

Do hashtags count toward the 280?

Yes, including the # sign. A long tag can eat a surprising amount of a post.

Can a hashtag start with a number?

It can contain numbers, but a tag made only of numbers, like #2026, isn't turned into a link. Add a word: #Launch2026.
